China's choppy waters in the 1920s

  • 🧩 Situation: China = Mix of discord & confusion.
  • Attempted Solution: 1923, United Front - CPC (Communist Party of China) joins hands with the GMD (Guomindang or Chinese Nationalist Party) under Comintern advice.
    • Goal? Wipe out those pesky warlords causing chaos!

Real-world example: Think of two rival football teams coming together to beat an even bigger, common opponent.

Changing faces & new goals

  • ⭐ Sun Yixian (GMD founder & leader) dies in 1925.
  • 🎩 New Boss? Jiang Jieshi - head of NRA (National Revolutionary Army) & BIG anti-communist.
  • Big move in 1926: Jiang's Northern Expedition!
    • Starting Point: Guangdong 📍
    • Destination: Up north! Think Shanghai, Beijing, and Manchuria.

Fun Fact: Jiang once said, “Japanese = skin disease, but Communists = heart disease!” 😲 Talk about strong feelings!

1927 – drama year

  • 🚫 Jiang, not a CPC fan, launches the White Terror.
  • What's that? A campaign to cleanse the GMD of any Communist connections.

GMD's northward adventure

  • 🚀 By 1928, heading towards Zhang Zuolin's territory.
  • 📜 Side Note: According to historian Jonathan Fenby, Zhang = “China’s biggest warlord”.
  • Nickname Fun: Zhang = The Old Marshal.

Bonus: The Old Marshal was pals with the Japanese in charge of the South Manchurian Railway. 🚂
