Transition to emperor shōwa

  • Background: Emperor Taishō dies in 1926. His son, Crown Prince Hirohito, takes over after being a regent for 4 years.
  • Hirohito's Europe Trip 1921: He had traveled once to Europe (a big deal because he rarely left Japan). Was warned about the "poison of European liberal thought."
    • Real-world Example: Imagine you're travelling to a new country and you've been warned about their "weird" food, but you arrive and you love it!
  • Hirohito's Impressions: Impressed by the casualness of British aristocratic manners. Saw a difference between their informality and the strict protocols in Tokyo.
    • Fun fact: It's like seeing the Queen of England eating a burger - it's just unexpected!

Hirohito's coronation & the shōwa era

  • Emperor & Shinto: Hirohito's coronation took place after a night at Ise (🌞holiest of Shinto temples). There, he connected with his ancestor, the sun goddess.
    • Real-world Example: Think of it as the night before your birthday when you're waiting for the clock to strike midnight to become a year older.
  • Shōwa Era: Meaning "a time of illustrious peace".
