Foot-binding - The Ancient High-Heels 👣

  • What was it? An old Chinese practice where young girls had their feet tightly wrapped to prevent growth.
  • Why? Two main reasons:
    • Mobility: It made it harder for women to move around. (Imagine trying to walk in super tight shoes!)
    • Beauty Standards: Think of it like an old-fashioned high-heels. Men found small feet attractive, calling them "erotic."
  • Fun Fact: Mao, a leader in China, put a stop to foot-binding in the 1940s. Yes, it lasted that long!

Real-world parallel: Just like high heels today, some fashion and beauty standards can cause discomfort or even pain!

Imperial Economy - China’s Ancient Economic Landscape 💼

  • Population: In 1839, China was a massive mix!
  • Major Ethnic Groups: Han, Manchu, Mongol, and Tibetan.
  • Did you know? Han made up 95% of the population! That's like saying 95 out of 100 of your friends have the same favorite song.
  • Size & Growth: China's size was similar to today's USA. Population of 300 million in 1839, which is like filling up 3 million classrooms! This doubled by 1900 and again by the 2000s.
