Atmosphere basics ๐ŸŽˆ

  • What is it? The atmosphere is a fancy cocktail mix of solids, liquids, and gases held close to Earth by gravity.
  • Main ingredients: Nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (21%), Argon (0.9%), and then a pinch of trace gases like carbon dioxide, helium, and ozone. Don't forget the sprinkle of water vapour and solids like dust, ash, and soot!

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Fun Fact: Ever wondered where our weather happens? It's mainly in the lowest 16โ€“17 km called the troposphere.

Temperature & height ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

  • In the troposphere, it gets cooler the higher you go! On average, temperatures drop 6.5ยฐC for every km you climb.
  • This is also where most of our water vapour is found. Go higher, and it's too chilly for water vapour to hang out!

Humans & atmosphere ๐ŸŒฑ

  • Humans are party crashers! We change the atmosphere's composition.
  • Effects? Messing with gases can have big impacts on nature. For instance:
    • Less ozone? Marine life takes a hit because of reduced photosynthesis. Poor fish eggs and larvae might get damaged too.
    • Too much CO2? Hello, global warming! Ecosystems might just flip out.
    • Water woes: Both too much or too little can shake up ecosystems.

Pollution & global dimming ๐Ÿ’จ

  • From the 1950s-early 1990s, some places like Russia experienced up to 30% less sunlight! Why? Pollution.
  • Polluted air = more particles = more places for water to stick. Result? Smaller water droplets in clouds.
  • Smaller droplets = clouds acting like giant mirrors, reflecting sunlight. So, less sunshine reaches Earth.

๐Ÿ” Real-world Example: Imagine wearing a white shirt on a hot day. It reflects more sunlight, keeping you cooler. Polluted clouds do the same thing for Earth!
