What bohr said

  • Discrete Energy Levels: Electrons hang out at specific energy levels.
  • Emission Spectra of Hydrogen: Bohr explained hydrogen's spectral lines with these energy differences.

But wait, there were flaws! 😲

  • Single Electron Issue: Works for hydrogen only (one electron). Oops! 🙈
  • Fixed Orbits: Thought electrons were particles in fixed orbits. But they like to dance around!
  • No Magnetic Charm: Couldn't explain how magnetic fields affect atoms.
  • Molecular Bonding Mystery: No clue about bonding and geometry of molecules.
  • Uncertainty Principle Trouble: Heisenberg said, "You can't know an electron's speed and place at the same time." Bohr's model didn't agree.

Real-World Example: Bohr's model is like trying to predict traffic with a simple map. It works for a quiet country lane (hydrogen) but not for a bustling city with many cars (other elements).

Quantum mechanical model - the cool modern view 🌀

Out with the old, in with the Schrödinger's wave functions. Let's see how!

Probability density & atomic orbitals

  • Uncertain Electrons: Forget the fixed paths; electrons play hide-and-seek! You can only guess where they might be.
  • Atomic Orbitals: These are "hot zones" where electrons probably hang out.
