What is paper chromatography?

  • It's like a race! But instead of runners, we've got different pigments competing.
  • Mission: To separate mixtures of pigments.

The chromatography setup 🛠️

  • Stationary Phase: A special paper called chromatography paper. Made of hydrated cellulose.
    • Think of it as the race track where the pigments run.
  • Mobile Phase: The solvent. It’s like the wind pushing our runners.
  • Start Line: A line near the paper's bottom where the mixture is dotted. It's like the "On your mark, get set, go!" spot.
  • Chamber: A beaker where the paper is placed. The solvent at the bottom is like a cheering crowd!
  • Lid on the Beaker: Essential! Keeps the solvent vapors inside, ensuring a party-like atmosphere for our race.

Let’s race! 🏁

  • Solvent moves up the paper, and so do the pigments.
  • BUT! Not all pigments move the same distance.
    • Why? They have different "feelings" or affinities for the paper and solvent.
    • Pigments that love the solvent more will dissolve easily and travel further. They're like the sprinters of the race!
    • After the race, what we see is called a chromatogram. It’s the finish line photo.
